Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of children, fishermen and repentant thieves.
Born in the maritime city of Myra, Saint Nicholas was an early Christian bishop of Greek descent under the rule of the Roman Empire. A worker of miracles, he was known to have calmed seas for sailors, chopped down a tree possessed by a demon, and even resurrected three children who had been murdered and pickled by an insane butcher. However, it was his private tradition of secret gift-giving that gave rise to the Christmas tradition of Saint Nick.
