Saint Joan of Arc is the patron saint of France, martyrs and captives.
Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who grew up in medieval France. Believing that she had been chosen by God to lead France to victory against England, Joan convinced the failing crown prince Charles de Valois to allow her to lead a French army to the besieged city of Orleans, where they achieved a surprising victory. Known for wearing men's clothing, Joan was eventually captured and burned at the stake on false charges of witchcraft and heresy when she was only 19.
